Dear friends, Can anyone tell me as to why I am receiving huge telephone bills after I got my internet connection. Is the MTNL meter also running alongwith the VSNL meter. Are we charged both ways? What is the procedure of billing? Thank you, Renuka

Hey Renuka, This huge bill is a common feature. I got bills amounting to Rs. 5000 per month also when I used 100 Hours in 1 month but its a fact that the 10,000 that you pay for 500 hours amounts up to Rs. 25000 by adding telephone bills to it. So be careful about the usage or use your padosi's Telephone line connection at night and surf the net like most of the Internet users in Delhi do !! Bye Deepak

While you count on the metered calls, please include these various types of instances where you are metered:- 1. Connection to the internet 2. A call every 5 minutes or less 3. The repeated calls made when you get garbled message on getting connected 4. The repeated calls where the ISP's phone rings once or more and gets disconnected (the modem at the other end has not fired but not responded - anyway your call has been metered) 5. The wrong calls you may get inbetween (although this is very rare in electronic exchanges) 6. If the route is busy and you get the busy tone, beware! I have a PCO with a metering device attached and I can write with confidence that engaged tones or route busy tones are also sometimes metered 7. In case you use the same phone to make outgoing voice calls include these calls also 8. Last but not the least, count the number of times you have called up the helpdesk. When we maintain a voice alone telephone call, we have a distinct idea of the number of calls, but when it is to the Internet, we stop counting after the first month of use. K N Srinivasan Udupa

HI Renuka, This is regarding the internet billing in India which you have been seeking information about. Well, as I understand when VSNL was teh sole provider of the Internet conectivity, for every hour the internet charge was Rs.30/- plus the telephone line usage for one hour which amounts to Rs.12/- being the charges for the telephone connnection to the service provider and worked out at the rate of Re.1/- for every five minutes (local call charges)which is 60 / 5, which works out to 12 local calls, which amount to Rs.12/- hour and also depends on the number of calls you make on your telephone. (charged as per the VSNL call slab tariff). So as per myh calculation, for every 100 hours on the net, teh telephone charges sould be around Rs.1200/- or Rs.1800/-. Please check up with VSNL or MTNL or Satyam computers who are the first private internet service providers in India at the moment. Hope this info, answers your question. Regards, Dave

Hi Renuka, Of course your telephone bills will go high. This is a catch which lot of people are unaware. The Internet account charge is payed to VSNL at the time of registering but the telephone usage charge is billed by MTNL. If you tempted to use Internet a lot which I bet you will, get ready to pay an additional telephone usage bill of 500 hours. Regards, Pankaj Bhakta

Subrahmaniam, You'll have to pay one local call charge every three minutes. One hour's usage will convert to the cost of twenty local calls. Cheers ... Puneet

Daanesh, All STD/PCO operators charge a local call every three minutes, and not five. So I would assume one's domestic phone biling would also work the same way. Cheers ... Puneet
