Hi am am a Senior at a University in NY, USA. I am currently doing a report on how the elderly are viewed in India. I have done a lot of research. But I would like to know first hand, how Indian people view the elderly. WHo takes care of the old in India? Family, government... Do elders get treated with respect? How often do elderly people get left alone to die? Things like this will be great information for me. So pleae if anyone wants to share information let me know as soon as possible. Thank YOu - Jamie

Hai, In practically all the cases the elderly are treated in India by the family members. In affluent families, the elderly are treated well. In poor families where the elders have some wealth kept in their names, they are treated best in the hope to grab that wealth on their death. There are very little elder homes in India. Generally the elders give so much love and affection to their children that in their old age good family background people would like to do anything for them in their old age and due to age old traditions, the family members cannot even think of separating the elders from them. I am over 67 and If I tell my son that I want to live separately from him, he will perhaps get a heart attack. That is India. Yours, BK

Dear Jamie, I can talk about my late parents. I tried my level best to convince him to stay with us as he was getting old, but he chose to remain in Hyderabad. When he was not well me and my brother went there and took care of him till he breathed his last in my house here when i decided to bring him here. Ditto with my mother. In fact she was staying with me and my family. We had made arrangements to have her looked after by a person when she could not manage. Instituional care for the aged is still not popular in India. The role of grandparents is very unique in an indian family. The bonhomie between the grandparents and grandchildren is something pure and refreshing.
