Regarding the Kashmir conflict, A new Idea
30th June 1999 Huzefa Rangwala @hotmail.com
Ever since Pakistan was created, the 50 yr old Kashmir conflict continues. I personally feel that this one issue should be settled once and for all in the following way but this may/will not be agreeable to both the sides involved. This is not entirely my Idea, but came out of a conversation I had with an american friend of mine, when I recently visited that country. Firstly Kashmir and its pok region should be united. Then a sort of local governance, short of full autonomy be granted by India in which the Kashmir region remains under Indian rule and for all purposes and intent is part of India, but where certain laws of both countries may apply. The people of India and Pakistan should have free access to it, ie without the need for a visa. Kashmir could be treated as a place for both the countries, but owned by neither. Afterall, the whole Subcontinent was united for a long period of time and only due to the divide and rule policies of england was it broken up leading to the current conflicts. Who knows, maybe this could lay a base for re-unification. Thanks and please do comment, Huzefa.

Dear Hufeza, Nice idea in theory but fraught with very many practical difficulties ! For one, the whole border problem will shift to Punjab ,Himachal and Delhi! No the solution is that the Pakistanis have to accept that kashmir is a part of india and stop all this border incursions. If relations really improve, we can have free movement of people. After all the europian union is doing just this! they have realised this after several years and world wars! we can learn from all these and save thousands of lives and thousands of crores of rupees presently being spent on defence expenditure of both the countries!
