How shall our country achieve this goal? Everyone has variety of experience using IT or non-IT. We all are playing with technology and our talent is running out. We need to hold this.. contents are another area where we can focus.. convert concept in reality and sell it globally..India has given lots to the world from learning to flying (udankhotala) We are saying the IT for common man. Is there anyone creating a awareness in this field in small towns. If we install internet in small town are they able to use? To use this basic education is required.. Lets debate and send me a mail [email protected]

IInn-mates [sounds like in-mates ;-)] > >How shall our country achieve this goal? > We can achieve this only 1. if we Indians have a DESIRE to reach this goal 2. start taking RESPONSIBILITY for things and stop blaming the government for EVERYTHING 3. try to contribute in every way we can. >Everyone has variety of experience using IT or non-IT. > >We all are playing with technology and our talent is running out. I doubt it. I feel private industry sector can play a big role in this. Companies like NIIT, Aptech etc need to set aside about 10% of their revenue in educating the rural public, after all they "have to give back to our society". Companies like Wipro, HCL should slash the computer rates for rural users (this will be abused to a certain degree, i.e. I can ask a villager to buy a system at the low price and then pay him a little money and buy that system from him) In April 1998 I visited Tirupathi and I was suprised to see computer institutes there offering courses in Active-X and Java :-) >If we install internet in small town are they >able to use? To use this basic education is required.. > I am sure few engineers may be willing to provide free training to our rural citizens, after all if not for these farmers we would not be eating today. I personally believe there are TONS of educated people in India who are willing to do whatever they can to help the country but we lack direction, leadership. INNList is really a good way to start this, to propogate ideas etc. But we need to implement it. I was very saddened to read http://www.timesofindia.com/161298/16mban24.htm (title is "US firms will computerise ticket reservation). I have nothing against US firms (after all I work for a US firm) but can't we do this basic project in India? After all did CMC did not implement the railway booking system? I am from Bangalore and I have heard a ZILLION times "Bangalore is the Silicon Valley of India". Karnataka govt has said "AP/Naidu is no threat to Karnataka IT". There must be DREAMING and/or they must be on drugs. If the government cannot find a software company in Bangalore to do this project how can we even think of being a IT super-power? I will admit that I don't have th FULL details of the project, so I really don't know what role the US firm is playing in this project. Book publishers also need to a lot more for the society. They need to donate books to libraries in rural areas. Most of the members of this list are professionals, we need to do something to change India. Just few days ago I had been to a reunion and I was so saddened to hear what all my friends had to say "India really has to improve the infrastructure" but NONE of my friends want to do anything about it, pointing fingers is really of no use in my opinion. I really wonder how many NRIs donate to their colleges in India (to buy books for the library etc). Just few days ago I met a friend in Atlanta who told me his brother-in-law is from Guntur Medical college (graduated almost 20 years ago and is in US). He arranged an Alumni meeting to raise funds to donate books to the college. Number of attendees: you guessed it ZERO! These are doctors who earn WELL OVER $250k per year! Now that I have rambeled enuf, what have I done for the country? I try to do whatever I can EVERYTIME. I try to donate to organizations that support education in rural areas, I SHARE what I know about internet, security etc with CERTAIN companies in India (free service, I don't charge) and I believe my homepage is making a difference (even if it is a small one) to Indians. I wish you all a happy new year and let us work together to make India a better country. Peace, ----------------------------------------------------------------------- B.G.
