Express Computer, March 29, 1999 The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), an autonomous body under the Department of Electronics (DoE), plans to invest about Rs 50 crore in remodeling the entire datacom network of STPI. Of this, Rs 20 crore will be invested in the first phase, which involves creating a national integrated backbone. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Indian Railways are expected to lend their lines and cables for setting up this backbone. Availability requirements would be met through a combination of borrowed bandwidth and enhancing the network capabilities by using upgraded technologies. Currently, each of STPI's earth stations has a total allocation of 40 megabytes for data communication. To remodel the network, the society will deploy asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and frame-relay, which is expected to enhance the utilization capabilities of the existing network. STPI already has 10 earth stations across the country. It will soon add six more stations, which it plans to connect for a nationwide network backbone. Besides, it will add three more international gateways to supplement the existing six locations to provide high-speed wide band data communications providing seamless bandwidth to the industry. STPI is also planning to expand to 20 secondary cities by the year 2000. All these measures are expected to help the STPI to meet the ambitious software exports target of $7 billion. The next phase will be to offer data network solutions to corporates on this backbone, said Mr.P S Narotra, Director, STPI. "We will provide corporate network solutions. A company having offices on this network need not make efforts in taking leased lines from the DoT or lay its own backbone as it can use our network," he said.

The software technology park of India is a DoE controlled body which has established these parks in several cities of India. They sell accommodation etc. to export oriented software units and are authorized to provide internet connection with in their territory. In the same vein, NIC was the first ISP provider to government departments as well as educational and accredited research establishments. With best wishes, P.K.Saha
