An incident in cleanliness...

27th May 1999      Srinath S @geocities.com

Hello iinn-mates,

Yesterday I received a mail containing an idea to be posted on the IfI
database (http://www.indiapolicy.org/ifi). It was so interesting that I
thought I'd also share it here. Surely, you would have had similar
incidents yourself. It would be very interesting to hear about them and
spread the message of improving the quality of our lives.

So, here's the idea I received--

I had been to Mysore last week and during my journey back something
happenned in the train , which I want to share with you. It can be added
onto the IFI site.

Well, I was just enjoying my journey, when few people sitting next to
me started to cut a jack fruit and you know if the milk from fruit is
spilt it is difficult to clean. They were just enjoying and the whole
compartment started to look like a garbage bin as the skin of the fruit
could be seen everywhere. I was really getting irritated not because
they were having fun but, they were not taking any care in keeping the
train clean. We all know that this is another major problem in India
i.e., maintaining hygenic condition. I just kept quite but, I was
waiting for an oppurtunity not to quarrel but to tell them what they
should do . Suddenly one person offered me the fruit and I promptly
refused. Then looking at my face I think he got the point. He asked
whether I didn't like the way they were doing things. Taking this as an
oppurtunity I told them that I had nothing against them eating the fruit
but, I was not happy with the way they were throwing things around
without bothering about the cleanliness or the effect of that on others.
I didn't shout or didn't seem to be upset but, I just put it across in a
calm way. I was very happy with the result. They asked me whether I will
eat te fruit if they clean the place. I agreed. And they did clean the
place, put everything onto a paper basket and kept it for disposal. I
was very happy as I succeeded in my job. I think if we follow certain
principles and make others understand it in a clear way, we will
succeed in reaching our goal of reducing some of the problems that our
country is facing. This is only a beginning..........
