Tally and Y2k

26th April 1999      Brajesh Dhandhania @vsnl.com

Dear Members

I would like to know if any one on the list is using a accounting
software called Tally version 4.5 made by peutronic pvt. ltd. bangalore.
I happen to use this software for my accounting purpose and have been
recently informed by my local dealer here in Calcutta that this is not
Y2K compliant. They are not going to update this version of tally and
the only solution to this is to buy a new package the cost of which is
Rs 15000/-. I Feel they are just trying to seel the new package force
fully as the old package is accepting the date 01.01.2000 and i have
tried to make voucher entries for that date also. But they say some
modules and reports may give trouble. I request if any one has any
knowledge on this matter to help as I would have to incurr extra
expenses for no reason.

It is quite surprising that such a leading provider of software says that
they are not going to update it. This is some what criminal. The rate being
offered by them also seems to be very expensive. I think user should force
the company to come out with a reasonable priced solution.
Problem of Y2k impact can not be know unless the internal structure of the
data base is known.

I had a very interesting experience regarding this. One of my clients bought
Tally 4.5, then upgraded to 4.6 from Peutronics India Ltd. Now in the wake
of Y2K problem, they sent a letter to Peutronics Bangalore, asking them
whether their product is Y2K compliant. Just imagine the response they got
from the developer.

Peutronics says, "Tally 4.5/4.6 is a discontinued product, we are not sure
whether it will work in year 2000. We will not be able to support this
product."

Imagine, this reply coming from a developer of a software product. In other
words it is just like disowning once own baby.

Hi Vikas,

Try out a product called Wings On Windows. Its reasonable priced and
available at http://www.wings-india.com

It's been Y2K compatible since several versions, and was rated best
accounting software by PC Quest, PC World, and Chip magazines.

This is for the person who asked about Tally 4.5 being Y2K compatible. I
asked Bharat Goenka, CEO of Peutronics (he is also the original
programmer of Tally), to clarify. This is what Bharat had to say -- I
have edited the message slightly to remove the personal stuff.

All development and testing on DOS based products have been discontinued
in Peutronics since 1994 - and Tally dss 4.5/4.6 is the last product in
that line. We are not in a position to test/ascertain fitness for use in the
year 2000, and are unwilling and unable to take any responsibility for
it.

We have been advising people to update to the newer versions - which had
been offered in the early stages at absurdly low-costs (as low as Rs.
4,500.00) to keep abreast with technology and ongoing development, which
some people decided not to go for - for reasons which I, personally,
have never been able to understand. It is not hard-sell - but simply good
advice. Today, asking to certify and/or maintain a DOS-based system is
akin to taking your valve-based radio to a transistor repair shop and
expecting service. And I don't believe the analogy is far-fetched.

hello there.

u r right that it is not totally y2k compliant because it was not meant
to be.
hence the company has all the right to disassociate with it.

i am not a frequent user of tally but i do bring to your notice the
practice.

when u enter a voucher, the date has 4 digits. when u display a balance
sheet 4 digits are displayed. there is no problems as such till now. i
have even tried entering 2001 and no problems.

only when u start a new company, it input only 2 digits. i think that is
the only problem (till now).

now the most approriate thing to do, is to change and avoid unforeseen
problems and that is not debateable.
