Shiva and Jesus at fault

There is an article in NYtimes today about some religious controversy in India at http://www.nytimes.com/library/world/asia/032399indiachristians.html I find the following statement very appealing and relevant to all religious wars but it is surprising how such sentiments can emanate from a police officer. A few steps away, some of the state's highest ranking police officer sat under the mango tree where the peace committee had met, musing about what had happened. "Religion is the opium of life," said Kulamoni Deo, the state's inspector general of police. "It is a very personal thing you do in your house. Why did they paint the cross in a public space? Is it for propaganda?" Marik, the divisional police chief, said that it was logical to ask why the cross became a source of conflict now, but that he had no real answer. Nor did he see any direct evidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party or any other Hindus had been involved. "If you go asking questions that way," Marik said, "then Jesus and Rama are the cause. You could say these two fellows are responsible. If you look at it that way, there's no end to it."
