New heights in corruption of 'so-called' public officials

21st Aug 1999      Huzefa Rangwala @giasbmc.vsnl.net.in

I am an Indian. I was not at all suprised to read the Wed the 18th of
august article of the Mumbai edition of Mid-day. In this article
a minister who is supposed to head the Aviation ministry, instead bullys
hotels like Centaur which are affiliated with Air-India. This minister
has the gall to order his day to day FOOD supplies like 10 to 15 litres
of milk , lunch, dinner, etc... and linen, crockery, cutlery from this
hotel by TAXI everyday ..... for which the TAXI bill alone comes to 600
Rs , not to count the hotel bills which are borne not by this so called
minister, but by the Hotel which in Turn passes the bill on to Air India
which in turn passes the bill to us. But Am I/Are we suprised, shocked ?
Of course anyone would be, but then I/we are Indian's . What is worse
than all of corruption is the way we, the justice system, courts allow
this to happen. There is an exellent saying 'Let the buyer beware' In
this case we just keep our eyes closed. All I would like to know is Isn't
it high time we woke up ?? Nowhere in the civilized/democratic world
would such behaviour be accepted. Conversely , only in a
barbaric/dictatorial country would such behaviour be acceptable. Now,
India definately in not barbaric not is it dictatorial, So We should just
ask ourselves the Q, WHY ? MAybe what we need is revolution, not
evolution.

The above article appeared in Mid-day Mumbai edition, Aug 18th regarding
a BJP minister, Ananth Kumar.

Thanks, and do comment,
Huzefa

CORRUPTION
It is unlikely we will see things improve at least not for the next few
generations. Unless there are stringent laws , there is no way things
improveJayalalithas and Laloo yadavs and many others will proliferate. Maybe
if Corruption cases were made Non Bailable these people would be behid bars.
It is possible that some innocent people could be incarcerated for some time
but in the long run corruption would reduce.

Hi,

I think our problem is innitiative. We are too afraid to be the loan
warrier. Plus, our people will join only when we are winning.

Hello,

Let us ask our leaders at www.bjp.org for comments on the same.
I am sending a CC: copy to them to answer.

Let's use the power of internet and investigate further.

What a good idea, Manish. I'd love to know the reply you get from the BJP
website.

Folks interested in this subject might like to read an article I wrote on
how corruption could be tackled. Its called "Who will Bell this cat" and is
available at www.sulekha.com (Its too long to post on the list, so read it
there). I'd love comments and suggestions beyond what I've written.

Corrupt officers !

I would like to bring to your attention the sad part of our so called
customs "officers" at Mumbai airport. Its really shame on our part being
under the government of these crook "officers".

Last month I was on my yearly vacation to India, the first approach as
everyone know is an encounter with these gentlemen. You are so depressed and
morally down when you see such officers begging for $50 and $100 in front of
foreign friends who happen to accompany. As if this is a sort of "WELCOME
TAX" as my foreign friend quoted.

It is really a pity and shame on our part to see these corrupt guys when we
first land in our home country. I'm seeing this sort of behaviour of these
"officers" for atleast 5-7 yrs.

I request the officials at the airport to behave in a dignified and decent
way.

Thanks
Muqeet
