New VSNL Account : Help rqd.

15th June 1999      Ramana Bhamidipati @netscape.net

Hi
I am planning to take a new internet connection for my parents who are at
hyderabad. I came to now that there are three service providers., viz.,
VSNL, satyam and Pioneer (this is a new one I suppose!!). Would like to
know which is better. And also what type of modem they require (i do not
have any idea as how current speeds are.) and better if any one gives me
make and price if available. Any other info is welcome.
Thanks

Hey there,

W.r.t. the three mentioned, I'd suggest you to opt for Pioneer if you plan
to be using the cheaper option. Pioneer offers 50 hours for Rs. 1,000 approx.
But it's a new SP and folks out here aren't yet sure of it's stability
factor et al.
If money ain't a problem I'd suggest VSNL which is at least reliable to
a certain extent. Satyam online, as of what the rumor goes, has _very_
poor customer service.
I have no inkling as to the speeds of the modems.

C.

You can purchase GVC modem 33.6 at price ranging from 2400 to 2600/-. Here
in Delhi VSNL connection is sometimes very erratic but they are improving
upon.

vsnl has the v.90 system enabled in Bombay on 4404444 and 431 series of
nos. im normally connecting on 48000 bps using my us robotics modem 56 k
voice fax modem and am getting individual download speeds of 5.4 k on
optimizing my mtu at 1500 and rwin at 10220 or 7x . following modems i
have tried and tested and have found to be very good

1 gvc 56 k - decent speeds , erratic holding good download speeds often
crossing 3,5 to 4.0 k cost about 4500 rs

2 lanbit - very good holding , good download speeds , often crossing 4.5
k on good connections . very good value for money about 4500 -5500

3 dlink = average speeds good holding , bad download speeds only once it
crossed
4.0 k with rwin having to be set at 8x . not highly recommended 3500
onwards - 4 generic india made 56 k rockwell modems- curiously this model
neither had a name nor a brand name after much searching and searching
the us govt fc database i tracked it down as a small company called
puretech (www.puretech.com) . this is very widely sold in india . it had
the k56 flex format and excelled in every department . tremondous download
speeds, excellent holding . this was the star in the widely followed k56
flex format. the best money can buy in this format

then came the x2 format used by us robotics which have two categories non
v90 and v90

non v90 modems will give excellent download speeds good holds . v90 well
they topped in all respects 5.6 k downlaod speeds unlimted holding i was
connected for 10 hrs straight . about 6500 rs onwards .

to make two issues clear firstly today there are two types of us robotics
being sold one the v90 enabled types which allow u to connect at 56 k
connects and two the non v90 56 k modems which reuire digital lines to
connect . it is easier to buy and use the v90 modems since digital lines
for 56 k is outdated now ..

also for all the old usr 56 k users there is a remedy . pls look up the us
robotics website to find upgrades for all flash bios modems . there are
free upgrades available i was able to flash a friends modem sucessfully to
new format .

happy surfin :)

Hi,

I am using LanBit 33.6K Voice fax data modem and I am happy with its
service. This model now costs about Rs. 3,500.

Hope that helps.
