Firstly ------- Whats your website about? What kind of audience are you interested in? What is the URL of your site? There is (or should be) a purpose behind every site for the audience and the people running the site. That determines how one can popularise a site. One is either running a site totally on a popular subject which can be of interest to a large variety of people - say the Miss World site, the Amazon site - or to come down to a smaller audience but still a 'popular' subject - the Zee Cine Awards site. The approach to 'popularising' a site of a 'popular' subject would be different from a site which has a more specific audience where how much can be considered as 'popular' would be different. This aspect of the subject, purpose and desired audience of a site plays a major role in coming up with an appropriate method of popularising a site. So asking these questions are essential. There are no very-effective standard ways applicable to ALL sites concerned. The general ways (like site submission - automatic or manual, banners - exchanges or paid) that are there can be useful just to a certain small extent and they too can be made more effective if utilised with the specific requirements of a site in mind. Secondly -------- How much competition does one have on the Web in the area that ones site falls under? If one does not have much competition and the site is fulfilling a need on the Web addressed by few other sites - a little effort can take a site a long way. If there are several other sites about the same subject as the site to be 'popularised' - well there is much tougher work involved which will require much more thinking Thirdly ------- Its not just great to get a million hits everyday - the standard concept of a successful website. The larger percentage of people who come should be of the kind that the owners of the site are actually interested in, if possible and once they come they should spend some time on the site, and RETURN. To what extent this happens depends on i. where and how promotion of the site was done in the first place ii. the quality of the site - its content, navigation, maintenance to mention a few aspects. Quality should not be judged vis-a-vis just any other interesting site on the net, but quality should be judged keeping in mind what the subject of the site is. Now, you may be dissappointed that this reply contains no 'tips' to try out which could help your hit-rate climb up. But then the Internet - and the Web - is not a miracle medium - where a few abracadabras would work wonders for any individual/organisation/website. It is just another medium - with its own characteristics which needs to be approached with an understanding of the medium - IF one really wants to tap its potential (again, I would like to say, it does not have any miraculous potential - it just has potential as every medium does which could be great for some and not so great for someone else). So yes, there is thinking, analysis and work involved here. One could discuss this further - generally or specifically - if you or anyone else is interested. But coming back to the original issue - for anyone to suggest useful ideas for popularising a site - it sure helps to know what the site is about and if possible have a look at the site concerned.
