Web server query

Hi All, I am looking for facilities to maintain a database backed web server. It would also have to have facilities to support custom CGI sripts or better, a custom web server on the internet. What would be the typical cost for such a requirement in India? I am planning to use the web site for non commercial uses. Best Wishes Srinath

The best solution is to go for a PERL/MSQL combination since you have said that you want to use Custom CGI with a database. There are many ISP's who support MSQL and Perl. Approximate cost will be $30 / month for a 100 MB of space with MSQL access. I have not included the programming charges here. Srinath, please let me know your details abt web space etc. what platform shd the web server be on? Other relevant details. How much web space u want on the server. Will u maintain the server urself or do u require maintaneance also? Sonu

What you are talking about is a web hosting service that will provide
the above facilities - the questions you will need to answer are -
1. what platform would you want - UNIX or Windows NT - depends on what
you are comfortable with and what database you would prefer. On Unix in
general hosting services provide databases like mSQL, MySQL - on NT you
get MS Access, Foxpro and other medium level databases and high end
databases like MS SQL Server
2. how much space
3. a hosting service covers a number of other things that you should
look before deciding your host as that is vital to the health of your
site
Though you've asked for prices in India, what I've found in USD for
such requirements ranges from US $30 to US $50 per month (sometimes
much higher too - often Win NT hosting tending to be costlier than
Unix) - these are commercial rates - there should be services willing
to give discounts for non-commercial sites.
I brought US rates in because most hosting services in India are
derived from the US.
Just my 2 paise worth ...
