Polluting Taxis in Bombay

Friends, There have been some laudable judgements, of late, on environmental pollution caused by vehicles in New Delhi. Whereas the salient measures would have been welcome for the whole country, it was confined to Delhi only. Bombay has a whole host of taxis which are ancient and outdated. Petrol fitted taxis were polluting as it is, but there has been a big move from taxi to diesel engines. As much as 30-40 % if not more have gone in for this conversion. The quality of diesel engines fitted is very inefficient and are all 2nd hand engines. The emission from the exhaust gases is inordinately high to the visible level of pollutants. This is an ominous trend. Are there any environmental organisations in Bombay who are looking in to this ? Anoop Singh Negi http://www.agni.org/invest
