Dear Indians,
You are all aware that the nation is facing a grave crisis. Pakistan has
foisted another war upon us by dispatching hundreds of heavily armed
mercenaries (actually Pakistan army regulars and other assorted barbarians)
backed by ground and air support. The valiant Indian army and air force are
fighting them bravely at the Line of Control (LOC) even as we speak.
Why this misadventure by Pakistan? After 50 years of saber rattling, the
Pakistanis have decided to escalate this conflict to grab Kashmir at any
cost. They have a two pronged plan. Cross the LOC militarily they have done
that already. More than that, USE the media coverage of this conflict to
cross the LOC by propaganda. The plan is insidious, diabolical but
admittedly brilliant.
In the last year, the Pakistani media has whipped up an anti-India hysteria
that is unprecedented in nature. It's not just TV now, they have crossed
over to use the Internet for this campaign. Web-sites that spew venomous
rhetoric against India and its operations in Kashmir seem to have sprung up
everywhere. IRC channels are full of Pakistanis trying to demonize the
Indian armed forces. Fallacious arguments are being posted on several online
forums hosted by news channels on the Internet everywhere.
THIS MUST BE COUNTERED!
A famous person once said that a lie told a thousand times starts resembling
the truth. The Pakistani media, the ISI and their netizens hope to influence
people all over the world. They in turn will influence the leadership of
their nations and pressurize India. The western world has a powerful
presence on the Internet - they cover a wide spectrum of people ranging from
commoners to influential people.
You are probably thinking that it won't make a difference. The point is - it
does. The power of public opinion has been enough to influence nations to
take radical steps everywhere. Let us remember that it was public opinion
that stopped the war in Vietnam. It is public opinion that is making Clinton
look demoniac when he bombs Belgrade. Most westerners have a warped view of
India that dates to the last century -thinking it is a land of snake
charmers and elephants. These are people who cannot understand that we can
make nuclear weapons, that we are confidently striding into space and that
we are becoming an Information Technology superpower. Half of the
information they believe in comes from Television, the Internet and Tom
Clancy novels!
Here is a chance that we can use to our advantage. We have to simply stop
this Pakistani war on the Internet - our democracy, our nation and every
ideal we stand for is at stake!
What you can do as a Netizen :
- Participate in Internet forums hosted by various news sites.
e.g.. has a message board on India-Pakistan relations,
which is highly frequented.
OR - a message board on the Kashmir crisis.
- Participate in Internet news groups like soc.culture.india and
soc.culture.pakistan. Post articles that support Indian actions and defend
them. In IRC chat rooms where these topics come up, defend India and explain
to people everywhere why we did what we did.
- Visit web-sites that post anti-India rhetoric and email the creators
/their ISPs to stop this. Alternatively, you may take "retaliatory action"
as you deem fit. Remember also that in love and war, there are *no* rules.
- Host a page dedicated to India on your personal website / homepage and
explain the facts clearly. Form a "ring" of such sites with friends.
- If you are based abroad, write to your local congressmen about this
conflict and stress the need to dissuade Pakistan from adventurism.
- Email your friends in Pakistan and other countries and convince them.
All this will NOT be easy. The enemy has been brought up on a standard diet
of anti-India
malapropisms that they will throw at you.
Enemy action on you may include and will not be limited to :
1. Vicious personal attacks on you / your country / anything else.
2. Attacks on your religion. If you are Hindu or Christian, the amount of
disgusting rhetoric will provoke you like anything. Most Pakistanis
unfortunately happen to be Muslim. If you are a Muslim Indian, they will
cast aspersions on your allegiance to your religion. From my experience,
they even try to coax you to speak in support of them, exploiting your
religious sentiments etc. Its downright disgusting, but check out
soc.culture.india if you don?t believe me. Put them in their place, tell
them about Indian secularism. And make sure they know that they can never
break us, come what may.
3. They will use obscene and abusive language frequently. Highly
provocative. Keep your head cool and respond with dignity.
4. Misrepresentations and total corruption of history that suits them.
5. Attacks on India's human rights records etc. (Most of their claims are
bogus - they keep hoping they can bluff you and everyone)
DONTS:
- Do not respond angrily or in a vulgar or obscene manner. That's what they
want. You do that and they've already won.
- Do not attack their faith or their religion - its against everything we
stand for. Secularism is the foundation stone of India - remove that and
Pakistan wins without firing a single bullet.
ALWAYS:
- Respond with facts and figures preferably quoted from an impartial source.
- Respond crisply in good language and to the point.
- Respond in a calm and dignified tone.
- Rebut all arguments with logical and concise statements.
- Call friends and other Indians for reinforcements if you feel outnumbered.
A third person reading your debate should get the impression that you are a
suave, well-educated, rational person and your opponent should get projected
as a villainous, foul-mouthed fundamentalist. It's obvious whom the person
would want to support. Remember, we need to WIN people over to our side.
Don?t get cross, get even.
In conclusion, I thank you for giving India your time. There comes a time
when posterity will ask us what we did when we had a chance to help our
country. I hope all of us can look it in the eye, breathe proudly and say we
contributed significantly.
