A complete Apathy

The cyclone in Orissa has left behind devastation of unimaginable extent. The complete apathy shown by the international community ,not to mention Indian community is despicable to say the least. If natural calamity of this kind does not even rise a feeling of compassion and generosity among the people, I wonder what will ????

Thanks to Elizabeth for pointing out the reality with the mindset of we Indians (educated Indians). >The cyclone in Orissa has left behind devastation of unimaginable extent. >The complete apathy shown by the international community ,not to mention >Indian community is despicable to say the least. This mailing list itself reflects such apathy. During last two weeks not even a single mail dealt with the subject. I remember the members of this list discussing the topics for pretty long time so enthusiatically in the past such as Indian Nuclear Test, Hindu revivalism, War at Kargil and USA-India Relationship. I guess cyclone devastation at Orissa is not glamorous enough to draw attention of our fellow iinn-l mates. But I am sure it is a pathetic reflection of our insensibility and strange sense of patriotism. >If natural calamity of this kind does not even rise a feeling of compassion >and generosity among the people, I wonder what will ???? Could be assassination of a popular political leader! I remember how assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi had moved the entire nation with enormous compassion to her family. Anyway it is just a personal assessment of an aspect of our national health in response to Elizabeths mail. Thanks for your kind attention.

Well, the discussion is done when either there is difference of opinion or where information is involved. Nobody will disagree on this point of calamity. Everyone will say, the sufferers should be helped out as much as possible. This matter doesnt need a discussion, but needs an urgent action.I have seen people asking/recieving information about their families & friends and wheather at this rediff platform.(I dont know how many genuine concerns get converted as real help in this matter). I guess, thats what one should expect from platform like rediff. I remeber , at the time of Latur earthquake, we students of small place in north india collected some money. We gave it to most relible source of help available. I believe, it must have reached to victims (not sure). But I always felt, there should be strong and proper channel on which public can believe that it really helps the needful. But still, I was happy, we did our part. rgds neeraj

Every one thinks that a life of a common Indian is no big deal !!!!

The trouble is that no one else is at risk. I speak for the general country. People's sense of security is not violated and hence the apathy. Pranav My geometry teacher was sometimes acute, and sometimes obtuse, but always, he was right.

When the cause is a result of natural disaster / natural causes, it appears that we don't care much.I don't know why?. It is the same among people of Indian origin outide India. Maybe it has got to do with the "Indian" upbringing.
