South India beaches

11th June 1999      Vishwa @wanadoo.fr

Can anybody suggest a nice place for holidays, with a lovely, unspoilt
beach, not yet crowded with tourists and without pollution by sewers,
chemicals and what not?

Dear Mr Viswanathan,

This has ref to your recent note on possible exciting South India sea
beaches. Please check out the undermentioned.

Visakhapatnam and nearby Bhimili in Andhra Pradesh have some of the
lonliest, clean and safe beaches. They are really fresh and with
very natural and picturesque surroundings. In short, these are the
the least exploited holiday resorts, I recommend.

Nearby (approx 180 kms) to Visakhapatnam is the Araku valley. This
is nearly 8000 above sea level hill resort. You can mingle and see the
very backward tribals and tribal culture with rich wild life. This
is a dif world in itself. The Govts of AP and India are really keen
to preserve the cutural heritege of Araku Valley. This is to be
experienced to be believed.

>From Visakhapatnam, approx 500 kms away is the Konarak Sun Temple with
the BEST of sculptures depicting the various dance postures from Indian
history, mythology and folklore. Konarak reflects the richness of Indian
dance and sculpture like few comparables in India. Also, nearby is also
the Puri Temple also known for the good sea resort with excellent
resort condominiums for rest and recreation.

The famous Chilka Lake is not far away and another great site to visit.

In short, I am recommending an off beat but a rich itinery of exploration.

Best of holidaying and write back if you need anymore info.

Depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking for virgin undiscovered
beaches bereft of tourists then you might consider the beaches of the west
coast located in Maharashtra. The nearest and the best is KASHID which is
147 kms form Bombay. It has about 4kms of uninterrupted golden beach with a
not a soul in sight on even a weekend. There is no fishing village nearby to
pollute the waters. Accommodation is easily available in a Beach Resort.

One thing that must be considered as crucial is the timing to visit the
Indian beaches. The current period is strict no no for swimming in the sea
as the tidal currents are very strong and the churning action of the water
in the premonsoon and the monsoon period makes the entire shore line water,
a muddy brown, and full of debris.

The best period is late November to early February. All the beaches on the
west coast have good weather and the water is clean and the tides are
gentle.

If you need more info, get in touch on my email address.
