Ideas on Alternative Medicine

On the IfI database, Subbalakshmi asserts that alternative medicine many forms of which are practicsed in India as separate groups, ought to be unified under one roof, so that the best practices of all the different groups can be united. What do you think about the idea? What is your opinion of the many native forms of medicine India has? How many of them have sound scientific basis and how many of them are blind beliefs? How do we identify scientific cure from a blind belief? What kinds of native medicine (ayurveda, homeopathy, reiki...) would you say, holds the most promise, in terms of providing economical, reliable and side-effect free health care? cheers! srinath -- Send in your ideas to address challenges of Indian life: http://www.indiapolicy.org/ifi

Hello there, I don't know much medicine - either Indian or foreign. But let me share with you what I once read about are the hallmarks of a scientific experiment. I am sorry I am forgetting where I read it or who was the author. It was in a book of advanced physics. It said that a scientific experiment should have the following three characteristics. 1. It should be reproducible. This means that similar results should be obtained from the expt even if the expt is conducted by diff people or at diff place/time. 2. Its results should not confict with observations. This means that it should not be the case that what you see happening in front of you should be predicted as impossible by the experiment. 3. It should provide predictions( not necessarily in the time sense, but also in the spatial context) to help verify its accuracy. Well that is it. Aseem.
