Enigma of Karnatak

8th Oct 1999      Aditya, the Hindu Skeptic @bc.seflin.org

I was reading a news analysis in TOI and it said that Karnatak voters get the
message too late. When the entire country voted against Indira Gandhi, she was
elected from there. This year they did the same in Bellary and voted against
the national trend.
San some one who knows about Karnatak tell us why they are so slow learners
even though it includes Banglore which is populated by the most forward
looking people?

People of Karnataka may be slow learners as per "the Hindu Skeptic" and
definitely wise enough to enjoy the benefits of ruling by different parties
at the state level and central level. That is why every year more and more
multi-national companies and investors flock Karnataka more than other
places. In most other places people are more concerned with their ideas on
Politics, Religion and communal hatred.
Watch Karnataka and it could be an eye opener for the entire nation.

Maybe it should occur to us that these are the people who maintain the
opposition? Unless you want another single largest party with single largest
majority to rule for 45 years.

As I wrote earlier it seems to be a case of anomaly only and not a deliberate
attempt to maintain opposition since Bellary has never returned a non-congress
candidate whether Congress was in government and opposition. These voters were
taken for granted in the high drama that accompanied filing of the nomination
and the voters did not disappoint the calculating politicians.

hi

To begin with the name of the state is Karnataka and not Karnatak. Not sure
why even the Hindi newsreaders pronounce it as Karnatak. After all when we
write it in Hindi it turns out to be Karnataka

exactly, that is why she did NOT stand from Bangalore because she would have
lost. You cannot relate Bangalore to other parts of the state.

Bellary has been a safe place for Congress for a very long time. In Star
News they interviewed a farmer who said he has no idea who was standing from
Congress but all he knew was that he had to vote for the party which had the
symbol of congress..

Hi mahesh,

I am not sure, how it is pronounced in Kannad BUT If I am right , Karnataka
in hindi is written as KARNATAK only. In any official government documents
in hindi OR hindi text books , its written as karnatak only.

If its really KARNATAKA in native language, It needs a correction at all
these places.
