Right Turn or Overtake

28 Sep 1998     Manish @del2.vsnl.net.in

On an Indian highway, when the truck going in front of you has the right
indicator on, what does it mean.

a) He wants to make a Right Turn
b) He wants you to Overtake
c) ?

Manish, you raised a very appropriate question.

It should obviously mean that he wants to take a right turn. But of late,
specially on highways it has come to mean that he wants to overtake. While
the first is what you will be taught in driving school, the second is what
you learn the hard way on the roads. It happens only in India :-)

It usually means that he allows you to overtake (someone told me this and
I was equally surprised). The way I figure it works is this (I may be
wrong).

The driver in front has a better view of the traffic on the right hand
lane than the guy behind. If you register your interest of overtaking you
normally dim-dip your headlights. If he then switches on the right
indicator he signals to you that the traffic on the RH lane is clear and
it is safe for you to overtake.

If he indeed allows you to overtake, etiquette further requires that he
should cut off the throttle completely until you have passed. This is
usually followed by a 'thank you' horn from you and is acknowledged in
return-'no mention'.

Like in Germany, it means 'you pass me, it is safe.'
Problem is not all Truckers are aware of the not so new meaning.
(and even fewer motorist know whats happening. .. when the guy doesn't
turn Right forever!!)

The indicator is used in the dark. If it is in response to a dipper
signal beamed by a following vehicle for overtaking, then it is a
signal to go ahead and overtake. But you can't really predict a truck
driver's (high) spirit.
