BCA through IGNOU...

26th July 1999      Chirag Mehta @india.com

Dear Innmates,

I've just passed my 10+2 board exams in the commerce stream. I'll be
doing B.Com from a good commerce college in Calcutta. I'm very
determined to do MCA (Masters in Computer Application) after my
graduation. To be eligible for it, one has to either have a B.Sc.
degree or do BCA (Bach. in Computer Application). Since I did not take
Science in my 10+2 classes I cannot do B.Sc. Hence I will have to do
BCA (along with my B.Com).

Fortunately, I found out that IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open
University) offers BCA as a correspondence degree course of 3 yrs,
completing which, I shall be eligible for the MCA course offered by
IGNOU itself.

But I'd like get my MCA degree from some well-known university/college
in Banglore/Mumbai etc., because I heard that IGNOU degrees are not
very well looked upon in job resumes.

So my main query is : If I do BCA through IGNOU, will good colleges /
universities take me for their MCA degree ? Of course, I know that
I'll have to pass their entrance exams first. What I mean is, does an
IGNOU BCA degree satisfy the eligibility criteria required by the
well-known MCA colleges in Banglore / Mumbai / Hyderabad ?

I'd be grateful to anyone who can answer the same and/or provide me
with the names of good MCA colleges (preferably with their website
addresses / contact email addresses) in Banglore or Mumbai.

I wonder if anyone has done BCA through IGNOU. If so, kindly let me
know as I have a few more questions regarding the same.

Thanks,

Chirag Mehta

dear chirag,

doing BCA from IGNOU may be fine, but first i would suggest you contact
someone currently doing it in the center at which you intend to join. this
is because some of the centers are very badly managed. all this means that
you end up spending at least one/two years more than the stipulated
duration of the course.

btw, i have heard that delhi & calcutta centers are well-managed. however,
that is not the case in baroda, where i live.

my experience:
i had joined ignou-mca in baroda. there was more than one instance of
receiving material late, not to speak of missing books in the parcel. also,
lab work was contracted to a private computer institute which after 2
months did not even have money to pay their electricity bills. as a result,
their electricity connection was terminated and we did not have labs for
one month although we used to visit the institute every week. after one
month, ignou decided to hunt for a new private institute, which took
another 2 months, by which time we had our semester exams. nobody in the
centers in baroda or ahmedabad (regional center for gujarat) could give any
answers for these delays. i decided to discontinue the course after about
an year of such mismanagement.
i hope you have a better experience.

on the plus side, ignou material is very good. their examination pattern is
very tough.

i have been working in the computer industry for the last 4 years and in my
experience, there is no discrimination against ignou (bca/mca) course.
only thing that counts is your knowledge.

your career plan is very good and i wish you the very best for a bright &
successful future.

regards,
...pravin.

Hi,

Double check the science bit. I know some one who got her b-com degree and
has got into some mca institute. Try the university of delhi.

And brush up your maths. Need graduate levelmaths for the enterence alone.
