The general impression that I have got is that computer hardware guys in
India are not using the net at all effectively - is my impression
incorrect?

There are several grades of vendors in the hardware market - I'm
talking of those who are fairly established. Even if they have an email
address, they normally do not check, reply to and act according to emails
regularly - let alone having a site or use the net effectively in any
other manner - whereas I can so many different ways in which the net can
makes things better for them and their clients - even if they are looking
at a very local market - just one city.

Or is it just that I have happened to meet such vendors?

Vani

that is the same impression i have got also i have looked up most search
engines including Indian ones like khoj and cant seem to find any
organized website . it is a real shame . one would have thought that with
the boom in the pc market hardware vendors would be scrambling to put up
websites showcasing their products but hat seems to be sadly lacking . I
hope they do take care and improve this abysmal situation

Vani you are not alone who think so.
I am in office auto industry for several years (25+ to be exactly) and I
have seen that they don't practice what they preach.

I am working on a site for a genuine Intel dealer. The site is under
construction. I am working on the Order Form which is up at:
    <"http://www.lampocomputers.com/orderform.html"> This dealer wants to
    deal with local customers.

Check out the Order Form and send me your comments.

Very true, but then mail order system never worked in India nor will
ecommerce. Either the fly-by-night operators have caused this or we
Indians want to take a decision after having seen the thing by our own
eyes.

Even some of the well established academic and professional organisations
are such culprits. To name one, Computer Society of India does not reply
its email.

Yes it is true that they Indian Hardware vendors/manufacturers do not
respond. A few sites like computersofindia.com just give u the prices and
names of vendors. Bigapple (bigappleindia.com) does reply but refuses to
supply individual parts. Established names like Samsung/Seagate/APC do not
bother at all despite having sites geared towards product showcases. Its
time someone took the plunge and started supplying individual kits/parts
for lone users.

I had got a site at sears.vsni.net which I shut down because I was unable to
get a good response - I was giving rates of all Computer components on a
weekly basis and was also offering shipping and warranties because basically
all computer parts are under bill and warranty and most of the products are
branded so it is not difficult to vouch for the quality. If people are
still interested then I will rehost the site and hope to develop a good
base - I can offer reasonably good rates though I cant claim to be the
cheapest in all products.

Looking forward to some response to tempt me to rehost.

Good point. I myself have not come across any good hardware seller on
the web. Otherwise I would have included it on my site. If you know of
any site that is not listed on Indian search engines (including mine) I
think you will be doing a great favour by telling these vendors about
search engines. Chances are most of these guys have a homepage but are
not net-savvy.

regards,

> Looking forward to some response to tempt me to rehost.

Firstly, it works the other way round - looking forward to some
hardware co. that tempts me to buy. :-)

Websites - and more completely "net presence" need not necessarily play
a role of marketing alone - and success of net presence should not be
judged only on that basis either. Ones net presence can be used for
communication, image building, marketing, support, providing
education/awareness ....

Some of the things that I picturise in a good "net presence" of a
computer hardware co.
1. prompt and reliable response to purchase enquiries/orders and
support email
2. a website that offers upto date product details and prices - with
extensive links of detailed information regarding various aspects of
the hardware and components- be it processor, VGA card or keyboard -
everything
3. a facility to lodge detailed support requests via the site
4. a site that offers answers to common and even not so common hardware
problems that people face - compu says Hard Disks fail: what are the
diff possibilities - monitor screen is flickering: is it a monitor
problem or vga card problem ......
5. facility to signup for regular updation (for eg. of prices, new
products) via email

One could do various things - I do not know what all you do and had
tried - we could discuss this further if you want.
Some basic aspects of any activity on the net -
1. whatever small facility one offers (even if it is just a facility to
contact via email - no site or anything) one must offer that small
facility well
2. ones net presence plays a role in building an image of the
organisation and service - that takes time - one must stick to it, work
on it constantly and give it time
3. the more extensive, information rich and sensitive to customer
requirements ones site is - the more confidence the visitor has in the
co. and its capabilities - s/he might still not place an order - but
might visit again and if in repeated visits one finds consistent
quality - then one MIGHT place an order. And anyway getting purchase
orders is not the only way one benefits from net presence.

Most of what is covered above (and a lot that has not been covered) is
what is first required for the 'e-commerce' buzzword - actualy monetary
transaction over the net is just a small part of the whole thing.
Transactions one cannot do on the net yet, but what stops one from
doing all the rest?

People do not make buying decisions only on the basis of minimum price -
support reliability and confidence that the people in the co. KNOW
their m/cs is also very important - hence ones net presence can be used
in multiple ways instead of just quoting prices.

Also, the way one would promote for a global audience would be very
different from the way one would promote for a local audience.
