Domain Name Registration in India

18th Feb 1999      Chirag Mehta @chime.hypermart.net

Dear Inn Friends,

I was wondering if I could find any info. on how to register a domain name
in India. Like www.xyz123.co.in

In US, they have InterNic that does this for US$70. I heard the registration
for Indian Domain Names is free. However I do not have much information
regarding this. I already have an IP Address, two DNS servers + web-server.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanking you,

Chirag Mehta

to the best of my knowledge, this registration is done by NCST in bombay
....
when we had registered our domain name pwa.co.in ... they are the ones who
did it for us ... but the whole thing was handled on our behalf by VSNL ..
the only ISP that was available in 1996.

check with your ISP ... they might help you ... or check with NCST website
.. i am sure dr ramani has something in place ....

Hi iinn-l'ers,

The last Domain Name Registration question initiated another question,
i.e. How does one pay InterNIC the $70 fee when foriegn currency
regulations are so stiff in the country. Is there a body where we can
payt in equivalent Rupees to register a High Level domain with the
InterNIC.

This is specially important when an company needs to register a Domain
for a client.

Any suggestions,
regards,
MuStApHa

Regarding domain registration in India , Satyam infoway , India's first isp
is advertising that they provide domain name registration facility. As they
are an Indian company, they must be having ways of handling this in Indian
Rupees. Any how these details can be obtained by sending them an e-mail to
them at [email protected] or in their website www.satyamonline.com

Well this is no problem, You just take the invoice from interNIC to a
bank which is authorised to make dollar DD and show it to them.

You will be asked to fill a form and the rest of the procedure is same
your normal DD

InterNIC fee for domain registration can easily be paid from India to
InterNIC directly - without depending on anyone else.

When registering a domain with InterNIC one can specify two modes of
receiving the invoice. Choose on of the modes to be to receive the
hardcopy invoice by post.

InterNIC activates your domain before receiving payment and allows
about 2 months (as far as I remember).

On receipt of the invoice, you can get a US Dollar demand draft made
from your bank (most banks, including SBI) using Form A2. The invoice
is required to get the US Dollar demand draft which can be posted to
InterNIC.

Since we are on the topic of domain registration, I'd like to mention a
point which many in India seem to learn about only after suffering -
Domain registration at InterNIC requires the following contact details -
Owner, Administrative Contact, Technical Contact, Billing Contact.

Technical contact would be the contact details of those hosting your
domain. Make sure that at least the Owner and Administrative contact
are your own contact details - so that you are truly the domain owner.
If at any stage you want to transfer your domain or change any details
you must not be at the mercy of your hosting service or any other party
for that. If you choose to make the payment yourself too then the
Billing Contact details would also be yours.

HTH

Vani

A .in domain registration in India is free. There are several criteria
which needs to be fulfilled before you will be granted a .in domain -
details available at the NCST site at the URL Udhay gave.
