Looking for a workman's Laptop

8th July 1999      vikram @kshitij.com

Dear Iinn-mates,

I am looking to buy a no-nonsense Laptop (without Multimedia
components)

The broad configuration I am looking for is:
P II Processor, 133 MHz or more
32 MB RAM (or more)
1-2 GB HDD
12.1" DSTN or 12.1" TFT or 11.3" TFT
NiMH Battery
Regular + USB Ports
2 PCMCIA II Slots
FDD
CD Rom Drive
Pre-Installed S/w.....only Windows 95

If there is any Laptop seller or someone who needs to sell away
his/ her used Laptop, please do write to me.

Thank you,

Hello,
This is in response to the first line regarding a " no nonsense "
Laptop.... .... LAptops by themselves cannot be a nonsense or nuisense....
... there are " Operating Systems( one of the main nuisense items that we
buy with money) " , improperhandling,et all.... ...and if u are asking for
the most established brands then you have IBM & Toshiba at the top end (
but again the service providers in India are also a cause of nuisense or
nonsense, you be the judge wrt the HCL support for the Toshiba Systems)...
... followed by Dell, Compaq, Acer and so on so forth ( in that order)

Thanks & Regards
Jayanta

Dear Jayanta,

I see you work at IBM. Are you saying that HCL and the rest provide bad service?

Anyway, what I meant was, I need a "no-Frills" machine

Be that as it may, I'd written to IBM Direct, Bangalore, saying I
need such a machine. While I know IBM doesn't usually sell such
configurations, they are also unwilling to tailor one for me. They
told me "volumes don't justify making just one for you."

My hard luck, I guess.

Honestly speaking , I would be the prudent enough to take a dig at an
organization and the support in an industry which has the highest human
turnover... ... anyway, I wanted to let u know of the general market
standing.. ... if that somehow gave a different impression, I need to
spruce up my English, but even then there is no denying that IBM/Toshiba
leads the pack... ... which ever way u may interpret it as... ...

Thanks & Regards
