7th Dec 1998      Anup Sharma @giascl01.vsnl.net.in

Hi iinn mates,

I wanted to know whether it sis possible to have video conferencing
through the net by having ISDN lines at both sides? Does anyone of you has
any experience regarding this subject which one would like to share? What
are the resources required etc

Thanks in anticipation.

Dear Anup, 7th Dec. 98

Yes, you can comfortably do videoconferencing using ISDN. In fact you
could use three lines and get a throughput of 384 kbps.

Thanks.

yeah... mtnl is bragging about this for months now. try to contact mtnl
who will promptly install an isdn line (isdn lines are 'on demand') and
send a huge bill which u have to foot. (and keep footing)

good fullscreen video conference requires 3 such isdn lines, and huuuge
bill.

all u need is a lot of money to blow up and a big company to back it up.

isdn moden, software, vsnl isdn account, camera and kit, isdn line and
voila!

Bandwidth of the single ISDN line is 128 KB. Ideally for video
conferencing the minimum bandwidth required is 384 KB. If you say "is it
possible" then the answer is "yes" but you may not get good quality.

Thanks
Ajay

Hello,

Yes, a 384 kbps is fine but you *CAN GET* good quality ISDN video
conferencing capabilities on one BRI (128 kbps) connection. We
demonstrated this with live during our seminar "Putting ISDN into
Practice". It was done with the help of Mr Milind Sathe of Sonali
Softwares. They are regularly using for their communication with NJ
office. No doubt they had teething trouble but now it working smooth.
If wish you may contact Milind at [email protected]

ISDN is 2B+D. Where B=64K. Giving you 2B = 64 x 2 K pipes and the D is
used by the PTTs for the signalling and other diagonistics.

Total bandwidth available to the user is 128K. Both 64 K pipes are to be
"Fused", together to give you the advantage of 128 K pipe.

Hope this gives a clearer picture.

Best Regards

Ali
