CHIP India - thieves??

6th April 1999      Nikunj Mittal @email.com

Dear IINN-L mates,

I would like to bring an incident to the attention of my fellow - members
on this list. Around 3-4 months back, we had sent a Demand Draft for Rs
1800 as subscription to CHIP. However, after waiting for the requisite
period specified, when we contacted CHIP as to why the subscription had
not been started, we were informed that they did not receive any demand
draft from us.

I requested them to send official communication stating this as this is
required by the bank before it can issue a duplicate draft. However,
since then I have not received any reply from them whatsoever even though
I have been sending this request to them for the last 1 month regularly.
I believe I must have sent around 9-11 mails, but those people do not
even have the courtesy to answer.

In view of the above, it would appear that they have actually encashed
the demand draft but not started the supscription. It means they have
coolly pocketed the money. I have been very disheartened because of this
incident, not because I have lost a paltry sum of money but because it
goes to show that even in era when we are talking eCommerce, the desire
of companies to win the customer's trust just does not exist in India. I
have had second thoughts about whether eCommerce will really take off in
India when companies like CHIP cheat people even in the traditional
postal method.

Dear Nikunj,

I too have had bad experience with CHIP India . Initially the copies used
to be delivered on the sixth of every month (that was for a couple of
months only) Now I receive the copy in the last week that too after
sending reminders. This month I have recived my copy taday but it is
without one out of the two CD's!

They are turning callous but in your case I would advise you to check with
the bank wheher the DD has been encashed .Because our P&T department is
known for its efficiency and timely delivery . In case it has been
encashed , you can even sue CHIP India as it would certainly have been an
a/c payee draft .
