Dear Syed,
The person for whom you are asking I suppose is a young boy and he has
a long way to go. Ask him for preparing IIT's and other joint examination,
infact they are the best one in the country. If already the person had
joined commerce then ask him to complete his graduation and go for DEOACC's
"A level" or "B level" course. The sylabus for those who are getting
registered to DEOACC for 2000 is really with the current technology of the
market and it is good. Another thing the concerned person can do is try for
MCA ( there are some universities who do not ask for science background ).
But still I say the best bet will be IIT's and other Engeneering college as
it gives the degree for a five year course and in U.S. if you want to pursue
your masters or post-Grad. you must have a four year Graduation Degree (
Indian regular Universities provide Grad. degree in three years, which in
U.S. is treated as Under-grad.).
With Best Wishes,
Tanmoy Das

The best option would be to complete 10+2 and then go for IIT graduate
courses (B Tech) or the REC BE courses that you can get through entrance
programs in different states. Take a lok at http://kar.nic.in for
Karnataka based courses.

If one just want to learn computing a short course at any computing
institutes on the fundamentals would be handy. Better still if the
person has a computer at his disposal use it daily to learn basic
packages (word processors, spreadsheets, databases) and operating
systems like DOS, Windows, Linux.

Hope that helps.

It is better to complete +2 or pree university course with computer science
before going for specialization.

Dear Syed,

Recently my niece, who has completed 10+2 in science stream (Maths,
Physics, Chemistry), has skipped Engineering entrance and joined
    Andhra University's "currently
less popular" BA degree with Maths, Economics and Computer Applications. I
think it is not a bad step she has taken. I feel, the combination of the
subjects she has chosen to do her graduation, will definitely place her in
good position either to persue a career in computer field or to go towards
CA, ICWA, etc.

As Mr. Arup Bhanja of Calcutta says, it is always handy :

"If one just want to learn computing a short course at any computing
institutes on the fundamentals would be handy. Better still if the person
has a computer at his disposal use it daily to learn basic packages (word
processors, spreadsheets, databases) and operating systems like DOS,
Windows, Linux." All these topics are covered in the Computer Applications
subject of the above mentioned BA degree.

Let me quote the situation of BE / BTech four year degree in Computer
Science from two neighbouring states, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu.

1. Translation of a news item from VARTHA (a leading Telugu daily news
paper from Andhra Pradesh) dated 5-8-99 :-

    *COMPUTER SCIENCE LOOSES ITS GLITTER*

"While demand for computer courses in EAMCET-99 Engineering
councelling is going down, demand for electronics and Electrical
courses is gaining to a considerable
extent. Among the first 500 rankers in the engineering stream, the trend
of many choosing Electronics and Electrical courses is noteworthy. Till
last year, computer science used to have high demand in the EAMCET
councelling. Hundreds of students used wait for second and third phase
admissions for getting computer science seat in Payment Quota, while
forgoing their Free Quota seat in other subjects. But this year the trend
has reversed. Many students, parents and even educationists are feeling
that it is better to join even in Mechanical and Civil courses and do some
special computer courses related to computer knowledge.'

"Experts in educational field are telling that as per the changes that
are taking place world wide, future will hold more opportunities for
    people who have done other
engineering courses along with some short term computer courses in 'then'
hot topics (Oracle, Visual Basic, Unix, Java, C++, ect.) compared to
people who have just specialised in computer science alone."

2. A news item from The Hindu (Chennai edition) dated 9-8-99 :-

    *COMPUTER SCIENCE RULES SUPREME*

"Seventy five per cent of the students admitted to the engineering
colleges in the State so far this have opted for courses which are the
    hot favourites in the
job-market. Of the 9,308 students who have been alloted seats and branches
by admission authorities till Saturday evening, over 7,100 have chosen
computer science, information technology, electronics, instrumentation to
enter courses that will keep them ahead in the information era.'

"Computer science remains the most sought-after branch. By Saturday
evening, 2,325 students had enrolled in the branch in Government,
    aided and self-financing
engineering colleges. Information technology has found 1,093 takers. In
the corresponding period last year, nearly 2000 students had opted for
computer science branch. Another aspect which had made a vital difference
this time around, is the increase in number of colleges offering IT
branch. From about a dozen last time, the number now is over 75 colleges,
attracting more youngsters. ...'

"Educationists, including AICTE Chairman, Dr. S. Rama Gowda, have
expressed concern over the trend of students moving away from core
    engineering branches like Civil
and Mechanical towards the more favoured and market savvy computer and
info-tech branches - leading to problems in finding expert human resources
on the infrastructure development sectors in the long run."

------

The above two news items stengthens my idea that computer science is
field where we CAN NOT PREDICT how the future will be after 6 long
    years (two years for
completing +2 and four years for completing BTech from IIT, REC or some
other college). So, I suggest that it is better not to narrow down the
scope to computer science alone for your X class passed boy.

Though I am not able suggest the best path, I am trying to eliminate
one of the wrong paths for your boy who is standing in the cross
    roads.

    With best wishes
